MEET URTA MONDAY!👋🏻🏔 Name: Tava Schollenberger Committee Position: President Elect and Legislative Committee School graduated from: BYU Years licensed/certified: 6 years Populations served: at-risk youth, acute psych, and addiction Current job: Recovery Ways Favorite leisure pastime: camping, hiking, and being outdoors Goals in current board role: I want to support the president in her role and goals she has set while learning the needs of URTA members. I hope to educate people on the role and benefits of having legislation in our state, and continue to move our profession forward. #utahrectherapy

Interested in using virtual reality with your clients? Join the University of Utah's Recreational Therapy Research and Training Lab for a CEU opportunity on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 9am-5pm at the J. Willard Marriott Library. Virtual Reality (VR) is an emerging technology that is quickly making its way into health care programs. Commercial VR systems like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have made owning a personal console possible both for clients and therapists. Research has shown that using virtual reality in health care can improve functional outcomes for diverse clients, yet CTRSs have found time and training to be a barrier to use in their facilities. This CEU workshop will provide valuable information about VR use and treatment implementation for RT professionals. Topics: This CEU workshop will cover background information about VR, set-up and installation procedures for the HTC Vive VR commercial gaming system, introduction to multiple VR games and applications with relevance to recreational therapy practice, overview of therapy resources, and extensive hands on practice and role play of RT sessions using VR equipment. Current job: Recreation Therapist at Brighton Recovery Center Favorite leisure pastime: Watching hockey at the University of Utah or the Boston Bruins! Goals in current board role: Advocating for the advancement of the profession however I can. I believe that our industry is doing amazing things that more people need to know about, but also that we are capable of many more great things and I hope to inspire positive change. #utahrectherapy

URTA Member Spotlight!🔦🏔 Once a month we will be spotlighting various URTA members to learn more about YOU, the awesome therapists who make up this association! April’s spotlight is Amanda Gomez! Name: Amanda Gomez Where do you work?: Wyoming State Hospital Why did you choose recreation therapy?: I chose RT because I saw that this type of therapy is a different and fun approach to helping others improve their quality of life. My professors at UNC-Greensboro were amazing at teaching the fundamental aspects of RT and drove me to become something I never thought I'd be. How long have you been in the field?: I have been a CTRS for 8 years What is an experience that has fueled your passion for RT?: An experience that helped fuel my passion for RT was when I was able to adapt a fishing pole for someone with a physical disability. It was then and there, I knew, RT was the profession for me. Interests and hobbies: I love spending time with my family and friends, hiking, camping, traveling, softball, and volleyball. If you had $10,000 to spend on yourself, what would you do?: I would take my family on a vacation to Maldives or Bora Bora. #utahrectherapy

MEET URTA MONDAY!👋🏻🏔 Name: Ashley Bowen Board position: Board of Directors School graduated from: BYU (undergrad - Go Cougars!) And Indiana University (master’s program). Years licensed/certified: Certified 13 years, licensed 8 years Populations served: I have mainly worked in community based recreation in Parks & Recreation agencies, but have worked some of my years in behavioral and mental health. Current job: Adjunct Faculty at BYU in Therapeutic Recreation & Management and Recreation Manager with Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation. Favorite leisure pastime: It’s hard to pick a favorite, but my top 3 are spending time with my husband and kids, soccer and snowboarding. Goals in current board role: Find ways we can best serve our recreational therapy professionals in the most effective and efficient ways. And educate professionals on the importance of licensure and how lucky we are to have it in our state. #utahrectherapy
