Dear URTA Members and Friends,

The following announcement is from the University of Utah regarding their new program:

Colleagues,

The realigned College of Health at the University of Utah announces a new Recreational Therapy degree program in the Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies. The program has received full approval from the Board of Regents and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and will begin offering classes in Fall 2016.

The Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies is also excited to announce the appointment of Rhonda Nelson, Ph.D., CTRS, MT-BC as a new tenure track faculty member.

Rhonda comes to the University of Utah from Temple University where she was an Associate Professor of Instruction, Therapeutic Recreation Program Director and Coordinator of the MS in Recreational Therapy program. Rhonda has extensive clinical experience working with individuals across the lifespan in diverse service settings and is committed to evidenced-based practice. She is an award winning educator who has been recognized for innovation and excellence in both teaching and student mentoring, and has provided professional leadership to several RT organizations. Rhonda’s research interests include aging/gerontology, creative arts therapies, and technology-based recreation interventions.  She holds a Ph.D. in Health Studies and a M.Ed. in Therapeutic Recreation both from Temple University, as well as a BME in Music Education and Music Therapy from Wartburg College.

Steven Bell, Ph.D., TRS, CTRS and I look forward to working with Rhonda, and believe her diverse expertise, experience and research agenda will be a great asset as we all collaborate in the development of this new Recreational Therapy Program and Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies.
